Primaloft Costs More Than Down. After $80,000 in Returns, I Finally Understand Why.

You know that feeling when the down supplier's quote comes in 30% below the Primaloft line item on your bill of materials? That little rush of "we can save money here"? Yeah. I know it well.

  3. Let the product category decide. For cold-dry-static use (like expedition sleeping bags), down still makes sense. For active, wet, or packable gear, Primaloft is the rational call — not a compromise.
  4. Verify sustainability claims. Per FTC Green Guides, terms like "recycled" or "eco-friendly" need substantiation. We now write that requirement into every supplier contract, and it filters out a lot of half-true marketing.

I'm not saying Primaloft belongs in every product. But I'm telling you that my "down is cheaper and therefore better" conviction cost me a season — and nearly a key account — before I understood the full math.

The materials industry has improved. My old assumptions hadn't. I've updated mine, and honestly? Both our product quality and my budget's bottom line are better for it.
